Hairpieces and Balding Men

One of my best friends, Baker, (see above pics) was faced with a difficult decision very early in life as he began to lose his hair.  He chose to wear a hairpiece (one of the best I have ever seen) to return to what he considered his youthful look.  In later years, for various reasons he discarded it for the natural look as you see above.  The point is, it's pretty much a done deal for us dudes that you will lose most, if not all of your hair as you get older.  In fact, statistics tell us after the ripe old age of 50 - 85% of men will begin this process.  So here are a few of my observations that may or may not help you make that decision when the time comes.

10)    With that said, all the baldhead jokes I made earlier in my life are suddenly not as funny as they once were.

9)    The famous star that pulled off this look flawlessly and embodied the phrase "bald is beautiful" was Yul Brenner.  Most recently, the "Rock" seems to pull it off very nicely.

8)    Most movie stars rarely view this as a plus to their career. For example, many stars wear a hairpiece or similar cover up - Matthew Mcconahay, Agent 007 stars Daniel Craig and Sean Connery, Ben Affleck, and even Kevin Costner to name a few.

7)    No US President has ever been bald, Dwight D. Eisenhour was the closest.

6)    Not sure about this, but do bald headed men really like their head rubbed?  Many people believe the old wives' tale that rubbing the head of a bald man will bring them good luck.  Notables who believed and did it regularly to the embarrassment of their friends - George W. Bush (43) and Muhamad Ali.

5)    Many people do not call it a hairpiece, and instead default to the term "rug."  Unfortunately, a bad hairpiece looks exactly like that - someone placed a rug on top of his head.  Clearly, his house is without mirrors, and he does not have any really good friends.

4)    Picking up on the bald is beautiful slogan again, I believe it is a much better look than the traditional "comb over."  Really, how can 3 or 4 strands of hair look good.  As Elsa, my favorite character from Frozen says "let it go, let it go."

3)   Yes, I have seen that movie (twice) and I watch the Hallmark channel and have never - not ever, seen a bald-headed leading man on that channel-- you must have a full thick mane that occasionally flops down in your face.

2)    Want to check out your new hairdo as you reach the golden years - look at your dad.  What's worst, notice all that little hair that's growing in his ears, it's coming your way if it has not already.

1)  My good friend Baker did leave me with some good advice on taking care of hairpieces.  It if gets wet, do not take shortcuts to dry it quickly by placing it on the lightbulb in the lampshade - not to worry, he got to it before the fire department arrived.

Extra - The third picture is part of the mix because it shows off my photography skills - the lighting, the position, a moment captured at just the right time for an unusual picture.

  1. Great stuff - keep up the good work - maybe Baker should rethink the hairpiece

  2. I’ll never forget an older gentleman at BBC long ago (Mr. Stanley?)… he parted his hair just above his left ear and combed over to the right. It was quite a sight. -Doug D (not anonymous)
